“ Regarding 301 Redirects and Video Sharing Sites

This is kind of a strange question/problem.

The name of my website is findportable(keyword). When I first created the site it was about portable (keyword)s. Later it grew, and now it is about (keyword)s in general.

Lets say for example it is about portable hard drives. I.e., findportableharddrives.com (this is a made up URL because I don't want to post my actual URLs here).

The site grew and expanded. Now it is about hard drives in general, and the URL doesn't really fit. However, by the time I realized the site needed to be about hard drives in general, it was old, had page rank and traffic, and I did not want to move it. Moving the entire site to a new domain would be too risky financially. Even on Google's blog post about 301 redirects, the risk is clear. The site is earning money and it also has three blogs which would have to be moved, so I don't want to move it.

I will soon start creating videos for the site, and uploading them to video sharing sites. I need to put my URL into my profile.

I can put www.findportableharddrives.com in there, but I feel it might confuse viewers. My website, and many of my videos will be about "hard drives" in general, not necessarily "portable hard drives."

My idea is

1. To use another website I own with a short and catchy related domain name. For example computers.com (also made-up - I don't own that!)
2. Create a blank page at computers.com/harddrives and create a 301 redirect from there to findportableharddrives.com
3. To then input "computers.com/harddrives" into the URL section of each of my video profile pages.
4. On the videos themselves, I would tell viewers to visit computers.com/harddrives for more information.
5. When visitors go to computers.com/harddrives they will be redirected to findportableharddrives.com .
6. Or, instead of redirecting, I could use a frame.

Okay. Here is my question - am I crazy?

From an SEO perspective, will these links be less valuable, than direct links to the site? And how much of a difference does it make? Any pro's and cons I should know about regarding this solution?

And if I would do this, what about redirecting vrs framing - any recommendation? Thank you! ”

I have been looking into having software written that takes my opt ins from my landing pages on a dedicated server and sending the autoresponder emails myself from my dedicated server. I have no blog. My bad. It seems that I am leaving money on the table by not having one.

The best information seems to be - sign up to Blogger.com because Google loves it.

Sound information I'm sure, but I do not like to entrust any part of my business to free and un-accountable servers.

OK here are my questions - at last!

Is it better to set up a blog on one's own server (remote server), rather than use - say Blogger?

If yes, then should one use the Wordpress facility on one's server, or one of the other blog scripts in Fantastico? -

Before answering, please see the rest of my question below.

Now, a slightly different perspective:

Please disregard the server facilities and capabilities when you are kind enough to answer my questions.

If I wanted to create many niche blogs, on one of my remote servers (with a generic . com domain name for the original hosting account, could I do this effectively using a multitude of different sub domain names each relevant to each unique blog if I installed Wordpress on the server, or would one of the other blog script installs be better?

Finally, you'll be glad to hear: I would like a blog related to my own business. would I be better off establishing my main blog under a specific and relevant domain on a different server to the one that contains the generic and throw away blogs, mentioned earlier? For such a dedicated blog, is Wordpress the way to go?

Of course all this pre-supposes that 'Blogger' is not the way to go - I hope not!

They are the type who will not follow advice regarding SEO, but seem to think they have a better idea on what to do even though they are novices who ask questions like "what's Firefox?" Months go by before they find time to spend a few hours working on their website, and this usually consists of maybe writing one article and then writing emails to me with bizarre questions, or questions like "how do I log in to my blog" after I have explained it to them 5 times.

So I'm looking for something relatively hands-free for them.

I have found two possibilities so far, TrafficMills.com and TrafficSage.com (though TrafficMills is not a continuity program as of yet).

Are there any other options I should know about, or any other service you would recommend? (And/or do you have any experience with the two I mentioned above?)
Obviously I want to ensure that my clients get a good service so that I won't regret referring them. And a recurring affiliate commission would probably make it possible for me to offer discounts to my clients when they sign up for the service.

Thank you very much, Mr. Stirling for your answer. I followed your instructions, purchased my domain name (answersfor.us) and viola! I was famous for about a minute before my ad was suspended for "inaccurate display URL". Apparently, I am not allowed to use URL redirecting. Yet, almost every google ad leads directly to an affiliate page.
Is there a step that I am missing that allows others to direct their Google ads directly to their affiliate page?

“ Hi, I need an adwords expert to please answer this question.

In my adwords account I am running a campaign, 1 keyword, 1 adgroup, and targeting 3 countries. Let's call this campaign 1.

I create another campaign, exactly the same as campaign 1, but the only difference is it targets a different country not targeted by campaign 1. Is this allowed?

Second thing is, if I created campaign 3, which is a copy of campaign 1, but the only difference is, it shows different ad copy. Is this allowed?

Lastly if for instance I had a profitable campaign for a specific keyword, and I want to duplicate that by becoming my own competition on adwords, can I simply create another campaign on the same account which targets that same keyword and using similar ad copy as my profitable campaign? I have a feeling this will not be allowed but just need to check.. and if this is not allowed, would it be better to simply sign up for another adwords account and run the new campaign there?

How do I set it so that adsense ads behave themselves and are a banner 3 horizontally across the column but on only one line instead of vertically down the the space pushing the content out.

I currently have a membership site for soccer coaches at www.soundsoccer.com with one level of membership.

I would like to relaunch the site with tiered levels. “ Hi experts. I noticed in one of Andrew Hansen's reply's he mentions putting a 250x250 adsense box right under the Blog post title for maximum CTR. He mentioned Wordpress 2.7 you must have to do this to make a table, so that you can put this box on the left side and have the article right alongside on the right of it.

I checked and there's no option to create a table that I see?

How can this be done? Hopefully my question makes sense?

For example: I post an article about windmills to mywebsite.com/alternativeenergy
An excerpt of that article is also posted to mywebsite.com
If a person clicks on the excerpt's title link, from mywebsite.com, the original post (at mywebsite.com/alternativeenergy) opens up in a new window.

My first question is whether this is possible. Protecting against duplicate content issues is another matter but first I just want to find out if this is possible in the first place.

“ I apologize for the length, but I wanted to be as thorough as possible in asking this question, so the expert that answers understands what I am trying to accomplish.

Before I set up my web site, I want to decide on how I should set up my blog. I see two options:

(1) The sales page will be the root of the domain and then blog is installed in a sub-folder (e.g. mysite.com/blog) or (2) the blog has its own domain (e.g. mysiteblog.com).

I find the first option more appealing because I can set up links not just to the sales page (root), but I can also set up deep links to posts (i.e. content) on my blog and have the “sales page” portion of the site benefit from the traffic going to the blog (since they’re basically together as one entity or site). Therefore, the “whole” site can benefit.

People will click a link and come to a blog post but see the sales page (i.e. main domain) and maybe check it out. I would also have advertisements for what I’m selling on the sales page from within the blog.

Also, when I set up adwords campaigns, I can send traffic to the content on the blog portion of the site thereby making Google happy. The sales page can benefit just from the exposure but without a reduction in my quality score. I can focus on linking my adwords ads to the blog with the content, but those content pages will have strategically placed ads and links to the sales page.

If I do it this way, I think I can concentrate on driving traffic by building really good one way back links to just “one” site splitting the traffic between the sales page and the blog, and I can take advantage of deep linking to blog posts. Therefore, that can help the sales page which is going along for the ride by having visitors click on those strategically placed ads or just going to the sales page portion of the site directly.

Does this approach make sense or should I set up a completely separate blog site with its own domain name and drive traffic to both the sales site and the blog separately (while also building in links from the blog to the sales site)? I could work on building the page rank of my blog (while using those ads for the product). I think this would take much longer, though.

I hope this made sense.

Well, I can't believe it, but I just found out from reading an email I just received, that I've been confusing the terms affiliate, advertiser and publisher when it comes to the CPA Networks. “ I was looking at Google Analytics for a site and I noticed that 85% of the traffic, over a period of approximately one week since Analytics was installed, was "direct traffic" (1494 visits).

It seems unlikely that this was actually people typing the URL into their browser 1494 times, in one week.

The map overview shows that the traffic is all coming from the USA. Its average time per visit is 29 seconds. The bounce rate for the direct traffic is 85%, whereas the bounce rate for search-based or referall traffic is 56% - 59%.

My first thought is - bots? Something else?

I Googled this, and unforuntately only found a conglomeration of confusions, opinions, and conjectures. My questions:

1. Is there a good resource on the subject of Google Analytics, fully utilizing it, interpreting it, and analysing its data? Such as an eBook, a website, a set of videos, etc?

2. Are there any probable or possible causes of this high ratio of "direct traffic?"

3. Do you have any advice or suggestions on how to better determine the actual sources of this direct traffic, or at least ascertain further details about it?
